EVENT MATERIALS
Biolog is a small-group discussion series for members of the Biolà community, typically bringing together 6–8 participants for informal and open conversations. In addition to scientific topics, Biolog also creates space to discuss the questions, uncertainties, and practical challenges that arise throughout academic training.
Session 10 | Fellowships & Scholarships
Securing research funding can play an important role in supporting both scientific progress and career development. However, many trainees find it challenging to identify suitable funding opportunities, develop a competitive application, clearly present a research plan, and coordinate recommendation letters.
This session will focus on practical strategies for applying to fellowships, scholarships, and other research funding opportunities.
Speaker
Sophie | Sanford Burnham Prebys
Sophie is a third-year PhD student in Biomedical Sciences at Sanford Burnham Prebys. She graduated from UC San Diego with majors in Molecular and Cell Biology and Human Developmental Sciences.
She has assisted her mentor with the writing and editing of an NIH R01 grant application and has independently received multiple predoctoral fellowships, scholarships, and travel awards.
She has also presented her research through both oral and poster presentations at international conferences and has received a Best Poster Award.

The session will cover:
1. Common application materials for fellowships and scholarships
What materials are typically required, and what should applicants pay attention to when preparing them?
2. How to organize and present a research proposal
Strategies for presenting your research question, research plan, and preliminary results clearly and convincingly.
3. How to approach faculty for recommendation letters
When and how to ask, what information to provide, and how to make the process easier for your recommender.
4. How to find funding opportunities
Strategies for identifying fellowships, scholarships, travel awards, and other sources of research support through multiple channels.
