About this conversation

Interconnected hypothalamic populations regulate the transition between social seeking and social satiety, with social touch providing a critical signal.

We thank Dr. Ding Liu for sharing the research, the thinking behind the discovery, and the challenges and decisions that shaped the work with the Biolà community.

On March 23, 2025, at 9:00 AM Beijing Time, Biolà hosted the 8th issue of the Bioneer First-Author Forum, featuring Dr. Ding Liu, currently an assistant professor at Westlake University in Hangzhou, China. At the time of the work presented in this forum, Dr. Liu was conducting postdoctoral research at Harvard University. Under the talk title “Neural Control of Social Homeostasis,” Dr. Liu introduced his first-author study “A Hypothalamic Circuit Underlying the Dynamic Control of Social Homeostasis,” published in Nature in 2025.

Social interaction often rebounds after a period of isolation, suggesting that social need may be regulated through a homeostatic process analogous to hunger, thirst, or sleep. Liu and colleagues identified two interconnected neuronal populations in the hypothalamic preoptic nucleus that are preferentially activated during social isolation and social reunion, respectively. Together, these populations dynamically regulate the transition between social seeking and social satiety, providing a circuit-level mechanism for maintaining social homeostasis.

The study further showed that social touch is critical for satisfying social needs. The resulting circuit architecture closely parallels neural systems that regulate other evolutionarily conserved physiological needs, suggesting that the brain may use a shared organizational principle to monitor deprivation, drive need-directed behavior, and signal satiation.

We sincerely thank Dr. Ding Liu for sharing the discoveries and scientific thinking behind this work with the Biolà community and for discussing how the brain dynamically regulates social need and social satiety.
